Accreditation and courses

As established in Article 19 of Decree 214/97 of July 30th 1997, which regulates the use of animals for experiments and other scientific ends, the experimentation procedures must be carried out by personnel accredited as researchers or experimenters, and the care and maintenance of the animals must be carried out by personnel with knowledge of looking after animals for experiments.

 


Research personnel

Definition

Person or people with a university degree in charge of the design and control of procedures with live animals, as well as the analysis of their results and the methods applied to reduce animal suffering.

 

Requirements

The research personnel must hold a university degree in Biology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology or any other degree    which includes specific subjects referring to zoology, animal anatomy and physiology and has at least 80 hours of postgraduate training in the following subjects:
  • Ethical and legal aspects
  • Biology and behaviour of laboratory animals
  • Microbiology and diseases  - Design of experimental procedures
  • Anaesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia
  • Alternatives to the use of animals
  • Analysis of the most relevant scientific bibliography

Experimenting personnel


Definition

Person or people carrying out procedures in which animal experiments are used.

Requirements

The experimenting personnel must have university training in the area of science, health sciences or in the case of the technical area, the field of agriculture.

  • Studies on livestock farms or studies from the professional field of chemistry or health.
  • Studies in the areas of chemistry and health complemented with a specific certified course for experimenting personnel or having passed studies on the module of husbandry within livestock studies.
  • Until the implementation of the studies corresponding to the new vocational training area established in the LOGSE, to access the category of Experimenting personnel, it will be necessary to accredit second-grade vocational training or secondary-school studies, as well as having carried out the abovementioned certified course.
