Summary of the CEIC's activity during 2005
The Clinical Research Ethics Committee met 21 times during 2005, a year when 353 clinical research proposals were put forward for evaluation, representing an increase of 19% on the previous year, with 57 more proposals.
This increase goes up to 110% if we compare it with 2001, at the beginning of the latest five-year period, with the presentation of 185 more proposals in 2005.
Graph 1 summarises the development of the proposals presented to CEIC, according to the type of clinical study, over the last five years, showing the growth of the total number of proposals, clinical trials and other research projects in 2005.
The greatest growth has occurred in genetic research projects, which have jumped from 52 to 109, an increase of 110%.

Clinical research proposals presented to the CEIC: distribution by type of promoter
Firstly, it must be said that in 2005 the number of clinical trials and observational studies promoted by the pharmaceutical industry has grown once again - 10% compared to 2004, reaching a figure of 121.
The number of studies on the initiative of the CSUB's medical services has also grown, with a total of 160 projects - that is, 20 more than in 2004 (+14%).
Of the centres making up IDIBELL, the greatest increase is in projects promoted by the Oncological Research Institute (IRO), which has grown by 128%.
